Let’s Be Honest…

Our unfiltered thoughts on the past week in sports…

John Calipari is in the Final Four for the 6th time in 7 years.  Is this Kentucky team going to bring him his first National Championship?

Baylor lost in the Elite 8 after breaking out, as we call here at TSG, the camouflage paintball uniform.  The television is glad they’re out because it struggled to maintain the proper color when they were on the screen.

Let’s Be Honest…

Happy New Year!!!

Our unfiltered thoughts on the past week in sports…

Tebow reigns! This time when it matters most. But let’s not forget Demaryius Thomas with that mean stiff arm.

The Saints scored all over the Lions. There was no mention of Suh and the defense throughout the game. That could be a good thing as he needs to work on his rep as a dirty player.

The Lions definitely weren’t ready for prime time on Saturday night but with that young nucleus they could be dangerous for the next decade.

Let’s Be Honest…

Our unfiltered thoughts on the past week in sports…

Let the bowl games begin! Did you know you missed three bowl games last week? Do you even care? (pic from Famous Idaho Potato Bowl)

As if Penn State hasn’t had enough problems their QB, Matt McGloin, suffered a seizure and was hospitalized due to a locker room fight with Curtis Drake, WR. What’s really good?

Quietly the NCAA has decided to hold off on plans to pay student athletes an additional $2,000 stipend. Let’s hope they can agree to enact this, it’s the least they can do.

Let’s Be Honest…

Our unfiltered thoughts on the past week in sports…

So Stanford and Boise State did their part this weekend to ensure we get a Alabama/LSU rematch in the National Championship.

Thankfully, Oklahoma State blew out Texas Tech 66-6 to remain firmly in the #2 spot.  Let’s hope they show up against Oklahoma on December 3rd.

Arkansas may have had the best return of the year. You be the judge.

Time to Go, Joe

Full disclosure, I’ve always had a thing for Penn State.  I read “Something for Joey” when I was in 7th grade and it’s the alma mater of my favorite uncle.  It was on my short list of colleges for those reasons.  I’ve always had a soft spot for Joe Paterno.  Even as his role was reduced to figurehead I thought he deserved to stay at Penn State until he felt it was time to go.  Unfortunately, in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal, that time has come. Does Old Joe Have To Go?

Joe Paterno, the legendary football coach at Penn State University has indicated he would like to coach four or five more years.  This is not really big news, unless you realize that Joe Paterno has held that position since 1966 and is 83 years old.  A part of me feels like he’s earned the right to coach as long as darn well pleases.  Joe Paterno IS Penn State football.  But then reality sets in.

How on earth is a damn near 90 year old man going to coach 18 year old boys?  How does he relate to the issues of these kids raised on technology and short cuts?  It’s hard to imagine that he can relate to the kids very well.  Can you imagine trying to explain an ipad to an 83 year old man?  So I can’t help but think Joe is nothing more than a figurehead.  He’s the closer they bring out when they need to lobby for better facilities and more money, speak at fundraisers, or to get that one last talented recruit.  No way you can convince me he’s in the room drawing up X’s and O’s, watching film, and breaking down opposing defenses.

So what’s the harm really?  Why not let Joe stay as long as he pleases, even if he is reduced to the Walmart greeter position for the team.  He’s doing the thing he loves and he’s not really hurting anybody.  But let’s just hope they keep him away from phone interviews.
