Let’s Be Honest…

Our unfiltered thoughts on the past week in sports…

With the way they’ve played lately is it possible John Calipari, head coach at Kentucky, could finally win the NCAA tournament with a team of his fabulous freshmen?

Duke’s late game heroics are thrilling but how far will playing like that get them in the NCAA tourney?

Are You Not Entertained?

I heard someone say last week that the NCAA Tournament might be the most entertaining sporting event.  As I thought about it, I realized there might be some truth to that statement.  This year a record number of people watched as perennial powerhouses like Kansas and North Carolina were defeated while the relative unknowns of Butler and VCU made it to the Final Four.  Why do people care so much when their own team is eliminated and home watching on TV themselves?  Read the rest of this entry »

Let’s Be Honest…

Our unfiltered thoughts on the past week in sports…

Jimmer Fredette was 11 of 28 and BYU lost a close game to Florida.  I have a feeling this isn’t the last we’ve heard from Jimmer.  Some players find a way to make it in the NBA and some players are just…Adam Morrison.

Apparently, no one told Richmond and Marquette they were allowed to be competitive in the Sweet 16.

No one really believes Jared Sullinger when he says he’ll be back at Ohio State next year after losing to Kentucky.

After leading Butler to their second consecutive Final Four, will Brad Stevens build a dominant program there or will he seek the greener pastures of a larger conference?

How much money did Derrick Williams of Arizona make himself with his NCAA tournament play?  But I’m still not sure I agree with taking a 3 when a 2 would have tied the game.

Let’s Be Honest…

Our unfiltered thoughts on the past week in sports…

How so very kind of Jim Tressel to “volunteer” to serve a 5 game suspension with his players.

Speaking of honesty, or the lack thereof, Bruce Pearl was fired from his job as the University of Tennessee’s head basketball coach. What took them so long?! It has been reported he had a violation this month as well!

No one in America considers the Thurs/Fri NCAA games to be the 2nd round (nor do we acknowledge the Tues/Weds games even happened).

The President was on a roll with his picks but even he got screwed by Pitt and if you didn’t Louisville or Kansas State probably did you in.

Speaking of Pitt, isn’t it interesting that the Big East got 11 teams into the tournament and only two made it to the sweet 16?  Be cool to know how Colorado and Virginia Tech feel about that. Read the rest of this entry »

HBCUs – WAKE UP!!

As I watched the NCAA Tournament bracket unfold on Sunday, one thing bothered me more than it probably should.  Once again, the MEAC champion was relegated to a 16 seed and being forced to play its first round game against a #1 seed.   To add insult to injury, the Hampton Pirates would be traveling to Charlotte, NC to face perennial national contender Duke.  The SWAC champion, Alabama State, has to play on Wednesday for the opportunity to face #1 Ohio State, in Cleveland, on Thursday.  This made me wonder, why are conferences made up of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) often among the worst in the country?  Why is there such a disparity in talent between the HBCUs and other universities?
