Did You Know?

01 Feb

Here we bring you lesser known stories or events that have enlightened us.

Did you know that the NFL has an officially sanctioned gospel event during the week of Super Bowl events? The Super Bowl Gospel Celebration is in its 12th year and it features the NFL Players All-Star Choir amongst other star performers. Yes, you read that right the players form a gospel choir each year. Though not as old as the event itself they, both current and retired players, have been “sangin” since 2008. And they are not that bad. [Ray Lewis back there jamming makes me giggle, lol] Then there are the featured artists and it’s quite a spread: CeCe Winans, Marvin Sapp, Donnie McClurkin, Mary Mary, Israel Houghton, and James Fortune. In the past the event performers have included Patti LaBelle, Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin, and Gladys Knight. This event appears to be a huge draw with the press release on the site touting “recent sell outs of venues in major markets hosting the Super Bowl including Miami, Detroit, Jacksonville, Houston, San Diego and Phoenix.” Wow! In addition to ALL of this each year a portion of the proceeds are given to a local charity. This year’s charity is the Pat and Emmitt Smith Charities. What an awesome event this is.

Now you may have asked yourself “why am I just reading of this?” We know. We’re wondering the same thing. And if this event is going 12 years strong and claimed to be so well attended…what’s really good? Now that we are aware and have been searching we’ve found video, press releases, reviews, and a Facebook and Twitter account.  What you can’t find, actual performances.  The NFL seems to be very hush hush with this thing.  While it’s a sanctioned event it is not one of the more publicized ones.  The media has access to the event but it’s very strict.  Makes you wonder, why is it a secret?  Is it better for the players to be seen walking red carpets and party hopping?  Do the players not want their involvement broadcast?  It all seems pretty odd but since its for a good cause we won’t probe any further.

Thanks to Reli who brought this to our attention.

Could it be because they sound like hot roasted ca-ca but no one wants to say that publicly because they sanging fo’ De Lawd, and so they just bury the event in the press materials?

They don’t sound THAT bad to me. *shrug* But perhaps it’s because in the clip they are singing back up. Now when the group of retired players sang I did not like so much.
