Derek Jeter…The Price is Right!

24 Nov

For well over a decade, Derek Jeter has been the face of the New York Yankees.  For well over a decade, he’s deserved that.  However, its 2010 and Derek Jeter is 36 years old and his skills are not what they once were.  He isn’t even the best shortstop in a Yankee uniform (but we all know there is ZERO chance that Alex Rodriguez gets that spot as long as Jeter is in pinstripes).  The Yankees offered Jeter a 3 year $45 million contract and he’s turned his nose up at it.  Derek are you crazy?  That’s enough money to keep you in young models and actresses for many years to come.

But this goes back to something that almost all multi million dollar contracts go back to.  Ego.  If you listen closely you can hear Jeter thinking, “do you know who I am?”  Yes Derek, we do know.  You’re an aging shortstop who is okay in the field and declining as a hitter.  THATS who you are.  I’m sure no one has told you that though because people are too busy telling you how special you are to the Yankees.  Special you were.  You were the face of the franchise as it became once again the gold standard in Major League Baseball.  But nowadays, you’re a run of the mill player.  You need the Yankees far more than they need you.

Derek, the price is right.   That’s why Yankees management told you and your agent to play the field.  It’s their subtle way of letting you know, your time is coming to an end.  You can end as one of the greatest Yankees in history.  Don’t let you ego lead you somewhere else.  Look at how silly Emmitt Smith looked in an Arizona Cardinal uniform then do yourself a favor and sign on the dotted line.
